On this premise, it's been argued that Chinese products are procured and used by the low-income earners. The dominant explanation for the surge in the uptake of these has been affordability. There is no doubt today that Made-in-China products have “flooded” African markets and homes and have afforded many Africans the opportunity to feel a part of the globalising world. The book also looks to the future, as a large number of new GSM and evolved GSM phones will support SMS as a mass market high availability messaging service, a new simple Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) suitable for use by everyone and for implementation in every new terminal is proposed.One of the only books which covers the complete SMS genesis from concept ideas to standardization of a first technical solution and its evolution to the present day.Describes the service concept including the limitation of the message length to 160 characters and explains the rationale behind the concept.Based on existing and newly retrieved documentation.Concludes that SMS has a long future since most future GSM phones will support SMS as the only messaging service, and so an SMS evolution is put forward. The standardization of SMS started in February 1985 as a part of the creation of the second generation digital cellular system GSM, and the 25th anniversary of the first work on SMS provides an opportunity to review and understand how this service was developed. These relationships varied by gender and level of education, varying most strongly among those without a college education. The data reflected negative associations between reported textism use in daily communications and formal writing and positive associations between textisms use and informal writing. Textism use was quite low, a finding that was consistent with previous research on texting and instant messaging. In Study 1 they wrote a formal letter to a company and in Study 2 they were asked to write both a formal letter and provide an informal writing sample on happiness. Seven hundred and eighteen young adults were queried about how often they used linguistic and contextual textisms, instant messaging, monthly cell minutes, and monthly text messaging. Two studies investigated whether the reported use of textisms in daily electronic communication is related to the quality of writing. The Net Generation has adopted textisms as shortcuts in electronic communication. These arguably connote an appreciation of phonology where the sounds of the words are what the students use to structure their abbreviations. The most frequently striking category of abbreviations involved maximum use of letters, symbols, or figures to produce the appropriate phonetic sound, adhoc abbreviations and a negligible or barest use of alphanumeric or hybrid method. A corpus of 300 SMS texts was then assembled from five departments but 200 were purposively sampled for the analysis and with Anjaneyulu’s (2003) five methods of generating shortened words in SMS as the basis of the analysis, the results revealed a preponderance of unconventional abbreviations constituting 60%of the data compiled. Consequently, this paper strives to unearth the varieties of unconventional abbreviations used by these students and analyze them linguistically and phonologically. This article has been aggravated by my incessant observance of the frequency at which unconventional abbreviations are used by Kumasi Technical University students in their Short Message Service (SMS) texts to others.
Nevertheless, over a period of time, some unconventional abbreviations seemed to be slithering into the literatures of students of Kumasi Technical University, Kumasi, Ghana where the study was conducted. Abbreviations have been used for quite a prolonged period and are putative wherever their use is effected. Abbreviations are intended to facilitate expeditious writing and make use of reduced space either on paper, the computer or the phone.
